Is Your Career Architecture Crushing You?
As we move into Q2 of 2026, the data across our industry has reached a tipping point. According to the American Management Association (AMA), 71% of leaders are now performing "spillover work" outside their formal roles, with 59% admitting this tactical drain directly limits their ability to focus on strategic priorities.
I call this group "The Burdened Architects". These are the Senior Managers, Directors, and VPs who spent the last decade building high-performance marketing engines, only to find themselves being crushed by the very machines they created. If you feel like you are running on a treadmill that keeps speeding up while your strategic impact plateaus, the data shows you aren't alone.
The Myth of "AI Efficiency"
One of the biggest drivers of this burnout is the chaos of "Agentic" AI. Recent Gartner research reveals a massive "AI Blind Spot": while 65% of CMOs expect the role to change dramatically in the next two years, only 32% feel their current skill sets are prepared for that evolution.
Instead of making your life easier, fragmented AI tools have often forced you into the role of "troubleshooter" rather than "visionary leader." Deloitte’s 2026 Human Capital Trends report notes that while 60% of executives are using AI in decision-making, only 5% say they are managing it well. You’re likely spending more time fixing the outputs of a broken system than you are driving the high-level growth you were actually hired for.
The Weight of the "Sandwich Generation"
Beyond the boardroom, the personal pressure is at an all-time high. Most leaders in senior roles are navigating the "Sandwich Generation" reality. Managing the needs of 10th-grade students while simultaneously caring for aging parents.
When you combine that personal load with a shrinking corporate budget and a Gartner prediction that 40% of CMOs will lose influence this year due to an inability to prove ROI, it is no wonder that burnout has hit a record high of 66% globally this year.
Reclaiming Your Career Agency
Feeling stuck or undervalued is usually a sign that you’ve entered the Stagnation Window. This typically hits between years 3 and 6 of a senior role. It’s that moment when your professional growth stops, but the organizational demands keep increasing.
The most successful leaders I’m coaching right now are moving away from pure execution and back into high-impact career agency. They are looking for Strategic Coherence (the ability to lead with intent vs. reacting to the next fire).
The goal is simple: You should be the one driving the machine, not the one keeping it from falling apart.

When the Bonus Lands but the Feeling is Still There
For many Senior Managers, Directors, and executive-level marketing professionals, bonus and merit season can bring a moment of relief.
It feels like recognition for the pressure you have been carrying. The visibility. The expectations. The constant need to deliver results, lead teams, manage stakeholders, and keep moving through change.
But once the bonus lands, then what? Because for many experienced marketing leaders, the deeper issue is still there. You may be well paid. Well respected. Performing at a high level. However, underneath you feel exhausted, disconnected, or quietly unsure whether this role, this environment, or even this version of success still fits.
This is where many people stay stuck. The bonus and possibly new title becomes a reason to stay and wait. Another quarter. Another cycle. Another year.
On the surface, that can appear responsible but in reality, it can keep you in a role that is no longer aligned. And when that misalignment goes unaddressed for too long, it can show up in bigger ways. Burnout. Resentment. Chronic stress. A real strain on your confidence, energy, and mental health.
This is why coaching matters. You owe it to your future-self to think clearly again. To step back and understand what is no longer working.
For senior and executive marketers, these decisions carry weight. They shape not only your next role, but your quality of life, your leadership path, and your sense of who you are becoming. A bonus can reward your performance. It cannot tell you what is next. If the bonus has arrived and that unsettled feeling is still there, do not ignore it. This may be the moment to stop pushing through and start getting clear.
I help marketing leaders figure out what comes next with clarity and conviction, so they can move forward in a way that feels aligned, sustainable, and true to who they are now. Let's connect and figure out what's next, together.
